Protecting your home from Storm Damage

Although you can’t control the weather, there are steps you can take to prepare your home for Perth’s severe storms. Regular maintenance of roofing, gutters, fences and the surrounding landscape will go a long way towards keeping your home safe, while being prepared for unexpected situations will ensure less stress during trying times.

The most common type of property damage from strong winds and hail is roof damage. Before the start of winter each year, take a look at your roof to ensure there is no pre-existing damage, such as loose tiles or sheets; the better condition your roof is in, the less chance that major problems will occur. If you notice a leak, be sure to repair it as soon as possible, a small leak can lead to big problems, including rotted frames, destroyed insulation and mould. For significant roof repairs, be sure to hire a professional to do the work safely.

Following on from keeping your roof in top condition, making sure your gutters are flowing freely is essential. Clear gutters and drainpipes are important for making sure storm water drains away before flooding your home or damaging your ceilings. Water damage is one of the quickest ways to devalue your home, so taking preventative measures is worth it.

Wind and rain only needs a small opening to find a way in, so each winter, check that all door and window seals are still in good condition. The problems that can arise from damaged seals are extensive, including water damage, rattling windows and so much more.

Apart from the inconvenience and cost associated with having a new fence erected, there are other issues to consider such as a loss of privacy and security, pets being able to escape and children not having a secure space to play in.

Take a walk around your property to see if there are any loose items around that could potentially become projectiles; these need to be secured. Furniture, kids play equipment, tools, pot plants and anything else not tied down requires attention. Anything that can’t be secured needs to be moved to the garage, shed or even indoors.

Purchasing a generator to have on standby will mean that food in your fridge/freezer will not be spoiled, lights and other powered conveniences will still work, and your family will be able to ride out the storm in comfort.
